Job summary
The Senior Director, Scientific Communications will develop and lead the Scientific Communication function ensuring it is central to INOVIO’s ongoing and proactive knowledge gathering, management and dissemination. Through development and implementation of a cross-functionally agreed Scientific Communication Plan that is supportive of strategic medical objectives the Senior Director, Scientific Communications will ensure consistent, compliant and impactful scientific engagement and exchange.

Essential job functions and duties

  • Lead the build and execution of the Inovio Scientific Communications strategy and function.
  • Lead scientific communications activities for approved and non-approved indications and ensure alignment with INOVIO objectives.
  • Build and lead the INOVIO scientific communication team, enabling high performing and empowered team members.
  • Lead the development and execution of scientific communication platforms, and medical communication, publication and medical education plans.
  • Produce high-quality publications supporting Inovio assets/products and disease education.
  • Develop high-quality scientific content for use by Medical Affairs and other Inovio functions, including slide decks, ensuring all functions have access to relevant information.
  • Continuously develop and compile knowledge in INOVIO therapeutic areas and act as a medical resource for the company.
  • Liaise with external authors, investigators and thought leaders on abstracts, posters, oral presentations, manuscripts and slide decks.
  • Ensure all outputs are high quality, impactful, accurate, fair, balanced and supported by data.
  • Develop required publication related policy, SOPs and processes, ensure all activities are in line with global, regional and local laws and current good publication practice guidance (GPP3 and ICMJE), including the review and approval of all developed content.
  • Plan, direct, and efficiently manage Scientific Communications budget. Manage all financial and contractual aspects of assigned projects.
  • Identify and screen appropriate vendors/medical communications agency, solicit and evaluate proposals, manage selected vendors and maintain productive working relationships. Effective collaboration with Inovio stakeholders (e.g. Commercial) to support successful commercialization of Inovio’s lead product.
  • Provide Medical leadership to the Commercial Team to assist in the development and execution of compliant commercial activities.
  • Provide Medical Affairs strategic input for commercial brand plan(s).
  • Support Market Access/Payer activities including AMCP and other payer-facing asset development.
  • Serve as a Medical subject matter expert and represent Medical Affairs on cross-functional teams.
  • Supports commercial trainings as subject matter expert on disease state.
  • Key Medical reviewer at Medical Legal Review (MLR) process & committee.
  • Support other Medical Affairs launch activities.
  • Work with the VP Medical Affairs to develop overall Medical Affairs strategy, tactical plans, and launch planning.
  • Provide strategic insights into regional and local key opinion leader development activities.
  • Works closely with the MSLs to ensure strategic intent meets tactical implementation (seamless transition between upstream and downstream medical affairs).
  • Define and develop appropriate Medical Affairs processes, standards and policies.
  • Provides input into the design and execution of corporate-sponsored clinical studies and external research program.
  • Support/lead other Medical Affairs activities including: medical information, medical education & grants, HEOR/RWE and medical operations.

Minimum requirements
  • Advanced scientific degree (PhD, PharmD, or MD)
  • 8-10 years of experience in pharmaceutical scientific engagement/medical communications/publications
  • Ability to think strategically about communicating to different stakeholders through all scientific engagement channels
  • Strong, consistent record of executing strategically and tactically in a highly matrixed environment composed of cross-functional, dynamic teams
  • Ability to work effectively, collaboratively and independently in a fast-paced, small-team environment that is growing and evolving. This position requires regular reprioritization of projects while adhering to timelines and achievement of deliverables.
  • Ability to innovate and present cutting-edge/creative solutions in the context of delivering scientific content and maintaining a high profile for the Medical Communications and Medical Affairs function by delivering exceptional value
  • Ability to critically evaluate scientific literature and evolving competitive landscape
  • Proven track record in leading a Scientific Communications function and team in planning, developing and implementing communication strategies to ensure successful product development and commercialization across multiple channels including journal manuscripts, congress posters and oral presentations, symposia and educational videos
  • Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills
  • Strong knowledge of current good publication practices and guidelines (e.g. GPP3, ICMJE)
  • Local candidates preferred, but hybrid remote will be considered.
  • Background in rare diseases and/or first-launch companies.

The annualized base salary range for this role is $260,000 to $283,000 and is bonus eligible. Individual pay decisions ultimately depend on various factors including, but not limited to, relevant experience, knowledge, skills, education, geography, internal equity and alignment with external market data.
